Het Rijnlands Lyceum Oegstgeest, located close to The Hague and Amsterdam,
incorporates an International and a Dutch school. The International
School has offered the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme
since August 1983, and in August 1988, the International Stream (age
11-16) was introduced. The International Stream uses the IB Middle
Years Programme, for which it was one of the pilot schools, as a pre-IB
curriculum. Most teachers hold the equivalent of an MA or BSc degree.
All non-native speakers of the faculty were enrolled in special English
language training and have passed an English language proficiency
examination.
The student body in the International School is drawn from 40 nationalities,
including 35% who are Dutch (expatriates). As well as the required
CAS and Community Service programmes, there are many extra-curricular
activities. Het Rijnlands Lyceum is one of the five organizing schools
of The Hague International Model United Nations.
Built in 1968, the school building has been extended a number of
times, with another major development planned for 2004. The school
has 70 classrooms, a large sports field, two gymnasia and a modern,
well-equipped sports hall, a recently upgraded media centre and
silent workroom, a separate computer room, science labs and a large
technology room. There are two boarding facilities nearby. Admission
is granted after an interview with the applicant and his/her parents
or guardians and after the assessment of the applicant's transcripts
of the past three years by an admissions committee.
The school year runs from the end of August until the beginning
of July.
